It's Almost Time to Engage With the Real World Again

Members have been sharing with us their joy after receiving their first jab. That means within the next month or so, more and more of us will start fully re-engaging with the world again. It means going to restaurants and coffee shops, seeing movies in theaters and watching music in 100-degree heat surrounded by thousands of other music lovers.

We asked members what their post-vax plans are and here are some of those responses.

I'm going to see a movie at the Alamo, I'm go tubing, I'm getting on an airplane. And that's just on Monday! Haha. I’m most excited for music festivals like ACL and riot fest

Chris, Data and Social Media Geek

I already have a flight booked to Great Britain and plan to hook up with some friends who live there. While I'm at Austin-Bergstrom, I plan to pick up some Austin treats, like barbecue sauce from Salt Lick

Angelica, Operations Coordinator at Veryable: I can't wait to go to Orlando and scare the crap out of myself by tipsily wandering around Halloween Horror at Universal Studios! I also plan to finally get the full Austin experience I missed out on when I moved here after the pandemic hit. Like going to my first festival. And then I have to reschedule my girls-trip to Italy that my mom promised me for my 26th birthday. Oddly enough, I have an urge to go to a pet store that sells puppies and pretend to be interested in buying one so I can cuddle and get my fill of puppy breath.

We're renewing our Season Pass at the Alamo Drafthouse as soon as possible so we can start seeing movies in theaters again. Our "home" theater is the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar.

“Keller said he’s not sure what will be in theaters in a few weeks, but he’ll watch almost anything at this point.  John says they’re definitely going to catch Godzilla vs. King Kong on the big screen.”

I can't wait to eat at my favorite restaurants. It's been almost a year since John and I dined indoors. We want to go to Old Thousand on 11th Street and Ramen Tatsuya on 6th Street — or South Austin. We don't really care. We just want to go out and have fun. Also, we're going to Las Vegas in May. In about two months, we plan to be very busy! (Editors note: Keller and John are also planning their wedding for spring 2022!)

Like any sane person, I have been thinking about this for a long time. For me, it's all about travel. I want to get on a plane again and travel without worry.  So I'm hopefully going to go back to Turkey and anther country...TBD. I have been debating where that second country will be and I've narrowed it down to Algeria, Senegal or the Azores Islands off the coast of Portugal.

Closer to home, I can't wait to get back out there and see live music again!  Of all the things I've missed the last year, surely that tops the list. I have tickets to see The Cadillac Three, who also happen to be friends of mine, perform at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on September 1st.  I'm so excited to make the trip and see some friends face-to-face.

And yes, I can't wait to go back to the movies - any movies.

But I want to say one last thing. Because of the virus, I have learned so much about myself in the last year. I went through a sad breakup right at the beginning of the pandemic and was diagnosed with prostate cancer on election day. Every day of the pandemic I have had to deal with finding new ways of doing old things. For the knowledge I have gained about myself in the last year, I am eternally grateful.

One of the things I miss most is being able to go to a coffeeshop really early on a Saturday morning and reading the news or getting some work done. It'll be nice to get back to Flightpath Coffeehouse. I used to know all of the morning staff people. But I haven't even gotten a coffee to go since last March. Being home so much over the past year inspired me to learn how to cook and start working out with a trainer (Bodies by Akeem!). But I miss days when it's really cold or raining. It'll be nice to be able to meet Akeem at his gym when it's chilly at 7am or when the summer heat becomes unbearable. And I also really look forward to sitting in a restaurant's indoor dining room again and let someone cook for me. One of the first

places on my list to visit is Xian Sushi & Noodle at Mueller.
