A birthday, a book club, and the World Cup

Quick story before we get into June: our goldfish Neo is about to turn one. If you didn't know, Neo was actually born in the Createscape aquarium. When we set it up last year, the tank sat cycling with just water and plants for a few weeks. Before we even added any fish, a tiny orange fish baby appeared out of nowhere. Turns out a stray egg had hitched a ride on one of the plants. Wild. Come say happy birthday next time you're in, he's grown a lot.

Now, June. We've got a lot going on this month:

  • Lunch Club from Nando's Peri-Peri – June 12

  • Pride Month Brunch – June 16

  • Work & Watch: World Cup – June 19

  • Book Club: The Left Hand of Darkness – June 23

  • Happy Hour (all are welcome!) – June 25

  • Lunch Club Out: Vegan Nom Food Truck Park – June 26

  • Squatch Community Workout (free for Createscape members) – June 27

The one I'm probably most excited about is book club. We're reading The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin, her 1969 sci-fi classic about an envoy sent to a planet where the inhabitants have no fixed gender. It won both the Hugo and Nebula awards and it's one of those books people are still arguing about 50+ years later, in a good way I think! I picked up my copy at a little bookshop in Lockhart a couple months ago and I'm just now diving in. Grab a copy, read along, and come talk it through with us on June 23. We'll be covering the full text by then.
