Laugh Tracks and Good Company
If you've wandered into the kitchen lately, you may have noticed the classic sitcoms playing on the screen, and the feedback has been great.
There's something comforting about a show that sets up a joke, lands it, and wraps up the whole story in twenty-two minutes. No cliffhangers, no homework, no need to remember what happened three seasons ago. You can walk in mid-episode while your coffee brews, catch a punchline, and walk out smiling.
It's also a format that feels increasingly hard to find. The multi-camera sitcom, with its live audience and simple setups, has mostly given way to streaming-era shows that are serialized, cinematic, and built for binge-watching rather than casual viewing. Production costs, changing viewing habits, and a shift toward prestige-style storytelling have all pushed the classic format to the margins.
A full comeback seems unlikely, which is part of why we love having these on. Consider it a small tribute to a style of comedy that asked very little of us and gave a lot back.
